KJ is third at qualifying midpoint

Richmond, Friday: Kurt Johnson got his qualifying effort at the Virginia NHRA Nationals off to a good start on Friday, opening with a quick 6.587-second, 209.43 mph pass in the afternoon at Virginia Motorsports Park.  After this remained his run of record following a competitive 6.605-second, 209.23 mph run in the evening session, the Georgia-based driver focused on improving on his third place ranking during one of his remaining two attempts on Saturday.

“We thought our ACDelco Cobalt made a decent run in the afternoon, but looking at the data on the computer afterward, it wasn’t what it should have been, so we knew there was room for improvement.

“As a result, we were looking to gain a little wheel speed in the evening session, so we put on a different set of tires, they didn’t perform the way they did in Memphis last week.  They were actually better than we thought.  However, we did learn something, so for tomorrow we’ll go back to where we were this morning, tweak a few things, and I think we can definitely pick up.”

Humphreys off to slow start at Virginia Nationals

Richmond, Friday: At many other stops on the NHRA POWERade Series trail, an elapsed time of 6.628 seconds would have been good enough to put Justin Humphreys solidly in the top 16 Pro Stock entries.  That wasn't the case Friday as the Virginia Nationals got underway at Virginia Motorsports Park.

"We're struggling right now," Humphreys said of the RaceRedi Pontiac GXP's performance.  "There's definitely something wrong somewhere, and we have to find it by Saturday."  His other run was 6.646 seconds.

VMP is less than two hours from Humphreys' home in Monrovia, Md. and he certainly wants to be in the 16-car line-up.

"Frank (Gugliotta, team crew chief) and the guys will be looking for answers to why it won't go quicker," added Humphreys.

Points leader Coughlin plans to stay on the offensive

RICHMOND, Va. (Oct. 6) -- Reigning NHRA champion Jeg Coughlin Jr. has developed a sound strategy for defending his current lead in the POWERade Pro Stock points -- "We're going to stay on the offensive," he said empathically.

Considering he's held the No. 1 ranking after two of the first three playoff events, Coughlin's plan of attack is probably a good one. His JEGS.com
Chevrolet Cobalt has been running strong for several races now and he managed to more than double his lead over his nearest rival at the last stop in Memphis, Tenn., from 14 to 32 points, despite the fact everyone in contention was running all-out to catch him...read more

Door Car’ Driver Safety Initiative Gaining Momentum

CUBA, MO (Sep. 30, 2008) — With “bipartisanship” one of the key watchwords for this political season, that same spirit of cooperation is being sought for the recently formed Driver Safety Initiative, following the death of drag racer Steve Engel after crashing his 1963 Corvette while competing in an NHRA Pro Modified event at Clermont, Indiana.

Chris Bell, crew chief for Dean Goforth’s IHRA Pro Stock entry, has been tabbed by DSI co-founder and professional chassis builder Tim McAmis to head up the new program. Bell has been deeply involved in professional drag racing for nearly 20 years with several major NHRA and IHRA Pro Stock teams. As such he’s worked with several top-level chassis men, including McAmis, Jerry Haas and Rick Jones.

“I think I have a good working relationship with a lot of the pro chassis builders and my hope is that we can convince all of them to participate in our search for ways to make these cars safer,” Bell said. “The cars advance in performance every year, but safety, while certainly getting better, has not advanced at the same pace...read more
